An Australian-first destination-wide initiative

Background

Visit Sunshine Coast is a tourism body that leads the destination in a comprehensive and strategic sustainability pathway. They believe the tourism industry is a catalyst for developing sustainable practices within the Sunshine Coast and wanted to create a program that appealed to both businesses and travellers, while powering local communities to work together towards Net Zero.

Solution

Visit Sunshine Coast partnered with Reforest to create a program that invites tourism operators and visitors to give back to local restoration projects, within the three biospheres of the stunning Sunshine Coast region.

Reforest developed a customised, Destination Dashboard for Visit Sunshine Coast that lists the total positive impact of the program. It also list the projects in the area as well as the businesses who were taking action to remove their footprint.

A Trip CO₂ Calculator was also developed for visitors to remove emissions from their trip by planting trees in local reforestation projects.

Outcome

The program launched recently in June 2023 with two project sites in the region, and several tourism operators participating.

The program is the first of it’s kind for destinations in Australia and unites businesses, tourism operators, and visitors in the restoration of local ecosystems.

The ongoing positive impact made in the region will be displayed on the Destination Dashboard with further outcomes to be reported.
